John was a great guide and regularly stopped to tell us about the place and its history which made it all so very worth while, and enjoyable. Lunch in the cafe overlooking Morecambe Bay was most welcome. A great day to remember...  Read Reviews

Boomerang Rides

For a small group of up to 4 cyclists, John will load the bikes on his car rack and drive the riders to a distant point. Here we will disembark and the group of cyclists will return home to Lowick ‘like homing pigeons’! Detailed maps and a route guide will be provided to ensure a safe return.

These Boomerang rides enable cyclists to venture into the Yorkshire Dales, the Central or Western Lake District, or Walney Island.

The cost is dependent on the distance from Lowick and is individually priced. These opportunities are for the more adventurous cyclist and will be a minimum of 50 miles and all day rides.

Britain's Best Ride - The Lakeland Loop

Voted by Cycling Plus readers as Britain's Best Ride, it fortunately passes through Lowick from where we start the ride. This route is a challenge even for experienced road cyclists, and includes at its steepest a short, sharp 30% climb on Wrynose Pass. But it is achievable and enjoyable taking in the East side of Coniston Water in High Furness, before ascending Wrynose Pass and dropping into Broughton-in-Furness and back to Lowick. Does this sound easy? Believe me, veterans of the alpine climbs of the Tour de France route have found this steep Lakeland pass the most difficult climb they have ever encountered.

Full details of all the more challenging rides we offer are on our Cycling in the Lake District website under challenging bike rides.

Why do you need a guide?

Well, it's taken one group 9 hours, as they got totally lost even when supplied with a comprehensive map and route planner! With a guide, even with a coffee stop before the climb of the day and a lunch or cake stop in Broughton, it should take no more than 5 hours.

This is a truly memorable ride which encompasses everything that is best about cycling in the Lake District. The tranquil clean Coniston Water with the reflection of the Old Man of Coniston looming over the lake, and quiet country lanes leading to the open fells. The severity of a Lakeland pass as it goes straight up to the summit, no alpine meandering here! A beautiful clear descent on an open road with great visibility to enjoy before heading through the valley bottom of the river Duddon onto Broughton. The Square cafe is a welcome stop either for a snack, lunch, or just a cake and coffee before the final climb over Woodland fell and the welcome sign of Lowick.

Everyone who has completed this ride has a grin of satisfaction as they dismount in Lowick, and some of their experiences can be found on our reviews page. This is a ride not to be missed!

The Climbs Of South Lakeland

A 4 hour ride which takes in the very steep climbs carved out by the glaciers of the last ice age! With names like Bessy Bank, Gummers Howe, Hare Hill and Thwaite Head. This is a tour that puts the Alpine climbs to shame. Strong legs and a range of gears are essential.
